New Process Takes Energy From Coal Without Burning It

Sounds nice, except for the 'combusted in a sealed chamber' bit. How is this going to scale up so they can feed 100 tons/hr through the plant cycle? That is the question.

The key to the technology is the use of tiny metal beads to carry oxygen to the fuel to spur the chemical reaction. For CDCL, the fuel is coal that?s been ground into a powder, and the metal beads are made of iron oxide composites. The coal particles are about 100 micrometers across?about the diameter of a human hair?and the iron beads are larger, about 1.5-2 millimeters across. Chung likened the two different sizes to talcum powder and ice cream sprinkles, though the mix is not nearly so colorful.

The coal and iron oxide are heated to high temperatures, where the materials react with each other. Carbon from the coal binds with the oxygen from the iron oxide and creates carbon dioxide, which rises into a chamber where it is captured.

They ran this for 9 days straight. They only stopped because they were tired. Scaling it up probably is not that much of a problem.
The bigger problem might be obtaining both the fuel and the oxidizers in quantity economically.

Coal powered that finely would be rather dangerous, because it has so much surface area. Exposure to air, any spark could set it
off. Handling it would require special care never to let it flow around or accumulate around the crushers. They might have to
make it in a slurry just for safety, then waste more heat drying it before use.

TFA shows them handling bottles of it, and even then they are wearing masks.

Video: Sideshow: Mississippi joins 19th century with ratification

>>> back to "hardball." now to the "sideshow." first "snl," "saturday night live," takes on marco rubio 's state of the union response. well, actually really just his big gulp .

>> we've all been there. you're about to give an important policy speech. you get a little nervous in the green room and you eat a whole bag of dry roasted peanuts and some beef jerky . you're wearing your lucky burlap unitard under your suit so you do what anyone would do. you suddenly lunge to the side all the while holding awkward eye contact with the camera and then you take a drink from the tiniest bottle of water anyone has ever seen. and then for no reason you set the bottle down even farther away .

>> would you like to give it another try tonight?

>> seth, i would really appreciate it.

>> okay.

>> for much of human history people were trapped in society. where is the watter?

>> it's right here. can you not here? it's never that far away .

>> oh, my god. ahhh! oh, so good. i just want to put that back.

>> as i said last week, marco rubio is going to have a tough time shaking his new title, the thirsty one.

>>> next, the old news, it was president lrng who ultimately pushed the states to ratify the 13th amendment and to end slavery with it. well, the update now in mississippi 's case. it was the movie lincoln that got the job done. the steven spielberg movie up for several oscars this week. here is the story. university of mississippi professor went to see the movie lincoln and did some post-movie research. here is what he found. mississippi lawmakers initially rejected ratification in 1865 . years later in 1995 lawmakers had a symbolic vote to officially ratify the amendment and it passed. that was in 1995 . end of story? well, it would be if they had submitted all the pape arework to the office of the federal register . that didn't happen until two weeks ago. now it has. thanks to that, one moviegoer and his friend, the mississippi secretary of state's office finally got it all squared away . 148 years later, better late than never, they've ratified amendment to the constitution outlawing slavery. and even though today's federal holiday is officially washington's birthday, it's really become a day when we look back on all the presidents. we've heard it time and again. you can never really understand what it's like to be president unless you are one of the few who have actually been there. over the years we have gotten some pretty inventive descriptions of that. being president is like running a cemetery. you have a lot of people under you and nobody is listening. well, that's slightly morbid. the description came to us from bill clinton . neck, being president is like being a jackass in a hail storm . there's nothing to do but stand there and take it. that's pure lbj. here is another on the same suggest. if i were two-faced, would i be wearing this one? no stranger to self deprecating jokes about his appearance. that was honest abe . i discovered being president is like riding a tiger. a man has to keep on riding or be swallowed. that's from the great give 'em hell harry truman .

>>> up next, why so the people this is the time to get rid of the voting rights act . i'm not one of them. you're watching "hardball," the place for politics.

Country star Mindy McCready dead at 37 of apparent suicide ... - WITI

(CNN) ? They seemed so triumphant at the time: the lyrics to country music star Mindy McCready?s hope-filled title track to her most-recent album ?I?m Still Here.?

Now, those words sound like a cry for help.

?On a cold dark cloud, with nowhere to fall but down, like a single, naked, unrelenting tear ? I?m still here.?

On Sunday, McCready, whose turbulent personal life overshadowed her music, was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home ? the victim, authorities said, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

She was 37.

McCready leaves behind two boys ? a 6-year-old and a 10-month-old.

Just a month earlier, police had paid another visit to the house in Heber Springs.

On that day, they found the infant?s father ? record producer David Wilson ? dead on the porch.

He too had apparently taken his own life. He too had used a gun.

Spiraling downward

McCready burst onto the music scene in 1996 with her debut album ?Ten Thousand Angels.?

It sold more than 2 million copies. Her chart-topping hit ?Guys Do It All The Time? followed that same year.

In all, she put 14 songs and six of her albums on the Billboard Country charts.

But through it all, she was spiraling downward. And the fall was painful and precipitous.

She struggled with addiction and mental illness, often publicly.

In 2004, McCready was placed on three years? probation after she pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining the painkiller OxyContin at a pharmacy.

The next year, she was arrested for drunk driving in Nashville, and was beaten and choked by ex-boyfriend Billy McKnight, who was charged with attempted murder.

?Yes, things have been going bad,? she said in a CNN interview in 2005. ?I think it?s God?s way of getting my attention saying, ?You better wake up, girl. I have important stuff for you to do in life,? and I?ve definitely been preoccupied or sidetracked doing the wrong things.?

Before 2005 ended, McCready had suffered two drug overdoses, was arrested on drug charges, was pregnant with McKnight?s child and, authorities say, attempted suicide.

She attempted suicide again in 2008, authorities say, and had another drug overdose in 2010 before joining the cast of VH1?s ?Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.? The reality show chronicles the life of celebrities as they?re treated for alcohol and drug addiction.

Celebrity rehab

Dr. Drew Pinsky said he contacted McCready last month after her boyfriend?s death.

?When I heard she was struggling, I did reach out to her and urged her to go to take care of herself, get in a facility if she felt she needed,? said Pinsky, who hosts his own program on CNN?s sister network HLN.

?Her biggest fear was the stigma of doing so and what people would think if she, God forbid, took care of herself. And this to me is the most distressing part of this story. She is a lovely woman, we have lost her, and it didn?t have to go down like this.?

On one episode of the show, McCready performed ?I?m Still Here,? dedicating it to the other cast members, which included Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss and Mackenzie Phillips.

?When I was writing this song, I was in jail,? the singer said tearfully. ?I never knew it, but I was writing for all of you.?

Custody battle

In the past few years, McCready waged a public battle for custody of her elder son, Zander.

In 2011, she took the boy from her mother, who had legal custody, and fled with him to her home in Arkansas, saying she had concerns over his safety.

A judge ordered authorities to pick up the boy and days later authorities found McCready hiding with Zander in a closet at her home.

In addition to her relationship with McKnight, McCready had romances with musician David Malloy and actor Dean Cain ? as well as admitting to an affair with baseball player Roger Clemens, which he didn?t confirm or deny.

In 2010, Vivid Entertainment released a porn video called ?Mindy McCready, Baseball Mistress? that featured McCready having sex with a boyfriend referred to as ?Peter? and talking about her exploits with Clemens.

Country outpouring

Sunday night, country music stars offered their condolences as they learned of McCready?s death.

?My heart goes out to Mindy McCready?s family. I knew her well,? LeAnn Rimes said on Twitter. ?It?s a horrible tragedy. May peace be with her sons.?

Carrie Underwood said she grew up listening to McCready. And country artist Terri Clark said she had some fun times with her ?back in the day.?

?I hope our society shows compassion and realizes the severity and reality of mental illness, and addiction,? she tweeted.

Singer Wynonna Judd posted a series of tweets also calling attention to addiction and mental illness.

?It breaks my heart what addiction continues to take from this life,? she said. ?Addiction is a disEASE & not a character flaw. When the pain becomes too much, it causes people to want that pain to stop. This is just so unbelieveable & so sad.?

In her words

A year ago, McCready posted excerpts of a book she said was upcoming about her life. She acknowledged a difficult upbringing, personal problems and the challenges she faced turning her life around.

?I haven?t had a hit in almost a decade,? she wrote in January 2012 on her official fan website. ?I?ve spent my fortune, tarnished my public view and made myself the brunt of punch line after punch line.

?I?ve been beaten, sued, robbed, arrested, jailed, and evicted.

?But I?m still here. With a handful of people that I know and trust, a revived determination, and both middle fingers up in the air, I?m ready. I?ve been here before. I?m a fighter. I?m down, but I?ll never be out.?

But Sunday, on the porch of her home, she may have changed her mind.

Using many partnerships when you begin web marketing, and make sure they are of the highest quality. Learn who you should be addressing through the audiences of others that have related websites. Even though you would not want to deal with competitors in this area there are always related fields you can link yourself with. Working hard is not going to be enough when considering to market online. The advice provided in this piece may be the guidance that has thus far been lacking.

A contest is a great way to bring traffic to your site. This is a great way to get people to come back to your site, and they will also share your site with others if the prize is a good one.

Never abuse this feature. The very best you can do with cookie stuffing is annoy your readers. However, the worst case scenario is that vital affiliate customer strings are broken, and nasty viruses are spread.

Use many venues for your affiliate ads. Lots of people prefer the convenience of online shopping. Other people would rather see printed material such as a brochure. Then there are those people that will respond more if a coupon is involved. By exploiting as many different marketing methods as you can, you?ll reach a wider audience.

You need your readers to trust you. If they believe that you have their interests at heart, they will be loyal to you. This will translate into increased and returning sales for your business.

Consider using secret links. It is important to know the techniques required to embed URLs into your text without making them misguide from the articles information. Use these thechniques as best you can, but avoid trying to deceive any of your readers. Readers appreciate honesty and transparency, so let them know the context of the link.

When you begin web marketing, register with those that will supply you with the types of things you want to sell. Diversifying your affiliate network will prevent you from putting all your eggs in one basket. Do your research before choosing an affiliate, you need to know who you are getting involved with.

You can make most profits when you use paid ads. You can increase site traffic through paid targeted advertisements. Paid advertising can also raise the number of interested buyers for your promoted products.

Trying to market extremely popular products isn?t always the best strategy. Popular products aren?t always quality products. Extreme competition could be a result of trying to market a very popular product. You may have difficulty turning a profit.

When selecting affiliate partners you should look for companies that offer a lot of support and resources to their affiliates that help to increase sales. It is rare to find affiliate companies that are stupid. They have invested in research that tells which marketing angles convert customers. The best companies provide the affiliates with this information, so that they can sell and earn more commissions.

You can use affiliate marketing programs to develop a very effective online marketing scheme for your business. Affiliate programs have been shown to generate much more site traffic than passive methods such as banner advertisements. Three factors to consider when determining which online marketing company to choose are the referral payments that you will receive, how popular the directory is and how easy it is to navigate.

A wise affiliate marketer is truthful about his affiliations. Always be honest about the affiliates you are using. If your visitors are not completely confident about your level of honesty, they are less likely to make a purchase for you to profit from.

Make sure you review all referral programs from your affiliate partners. Many established companies will offer higher compensation for referrals. Some even offer a percentage of commission on sales for referred business. If you are an active member in your industry group or you have a business that is in a rising market, you could be in a position to be able to refer to an affiliate marketing business.

Give a reason to your visitors to click on your banner ads, such as a game or a trivia question. These questions make it very difficult to resist clicking. Tactics like these are a great way to drive customers to your site.

Your goal is know your target market and determine the best ways to meet their needs; not to lure potential buyers away from another website and entice them to visit yours. This advice will help you get on the road to success.

NBC Sports Writer Smears Baptist Church with Tebow Ties

By Todd Starnes

The pastor of one of the nation?s most prominent Southern Baptist churches is calling on NBC to retract a column that labeled the congregation as being ?virulently anti-gay and anti-Semitic.?

FOLLOW TODD ON FACEBOOK FOR CULTURE WAR NEWS. CLICK HERE TO JOIN!

Rick Chandler, an NBC Sports ?Off the Bench? writer, smeared the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas and urged Tim Tebow to cancel an upcoming appearance at the church.

?Tim Tebow to speak at virulently anti-gay, anti-Semitic Dallas megachurch,? read the headline on Chandler?s column.

?That?s the church led by pastor Robert Jeffress, a virulently anti-gay and anti-Semitic evangelical Christian,? he wrote. ?It seems that lately Tim Tebow has been making more speaking appearances in church than he has quarterback appearances in NFL games.?

Jeffress said the accusations levied by Chandler were based on second and third-hand stories that were filled with inaccuracies.

?I would like NBC Sports to acknowledge that they made an error in their reporting and relied on secondary sources instead of doing their own reporting and fact-finding like any credible news organization ought to,? Jeffress told Fox News. ?

Jeffress denied that his 11,000-member church is anti-gay or anti-Semitic.

?Nothing could be further from the truth,? he told Fox News. ?We are a very pro-Israel church. To say that Jesus Christ is the only way for a person to be saved is not anti-Semitic.?

The New York Daily News also picked up on Tebow?s upcoming appearance at the church and also slammed the church.

?Tebow?s Hate Date: Tim to Talk at Gay Bash, Anti-Jew pastor?s church,? the headline screamed.

Jeffress said that kind of reporting is why Americans don?t trust journalists.

?This is another example of gross inaccuracies supported by the liberal press with no resemblance to truth whatsoever,? Jeffress said. ?This is a part of not just a liberal agenda ? but sloppy journalism.?

He said it?s clear the news organizations have no understanding of mainstream evangelical Christian beliefs.

?What I have said about homosexuality going against God?s standard for human sexuality ? and about Christ being the only provision for salvation ? these are not radical ideas,? he said. ?These have been a part of historic Christian faith for 2,000 years.?

But Jeffress ultimately believes the media was really looking for another chance to bash Tebow.

?I think the long knives have been out for Tim for some time,? he said. ?This is another way to try to attack him for his Christian beliefs. Most discerning people realize this was an ambush ? not of us so much ? but of Tim Tebow and the beliefs we hold dear.?

Ken Shepherd, managing editor of Newsbusters, defended Pastor Jeffress, while noting Chandler is entitled to his personal opinion of both the minister and Tebow.

?Jeffress is certainly controversial and outspoken on religious and political matters, but to tag him anti-gay or anti-Semite is unfair and unhelpful to the interests of any rational discussion about the religious beliefs that Jeffress holds,? he wrote.

hot debate about the president's proposal in the state of the union to raise the minimum wage in america. He said he wants to raise it from $7.25 an hour to $9, tied to inflation. And that will effect 15 million people. By the way, nearly two-thirds women and they're young, working to make their way into the middle class. So, how much would this help? Here's abc's chief white house correspondent jonathan karl. Reporter: The president took his state of the union message on the road today to asheville, north carolina, touting his most controversial new proposal -- raising the minimum wage. It's time for an increase the minimum wage, because if you work full time, you shouldn't be in poverty. Reporter: Lucas case of henderson county, north carolina, is a high school grad who couldn't afford college. He makes the minimum wage washing dishes. Well, it's not fun living paycheck to paycheck. Reporter: Working 30 hours a week, he earns just $217 dollars a week. A raise to $9 an hour would mean $52 a week more in his paycheck. What would he do with the extra money? Be able to do more things, have a better life. Reporter: The raise would be enough to lift at least some people out of poverty. A full-time minimum wage worker earns $14,500 a year. For a single parent with a child, that's below the federal poverty line. 9 an hour means the annual salary of $18,000, slightly above the poverty level. But critics say there's a big downside. Raise the minimum wage and companies won't be able to hire as many workers. Why would we want to make it harder for small employers to hire people? Reporter: As evidence, they point to the unemployment rate among young people, who are the most likely to earn minimum wage. Youth unappointment went up after the minimum wage increased six years ago and now stands at nearly 24 pshgt, much higher than the overall rate. The president faces a big uphill fight in this in congress from republicans who say raising the minimum wage would only send the unemployment rate higher. As one senate republican told me today, the last thing employers need right now is to make hiring people more expensive. Diane? Morning after the state of the union. Thank you so much, jonathan karl.

Will Ferrell dresses as security guard to eject Shaquille O?Neill from NBA game

Celebrities At The Lakers Game
Hilarious: Will Ferrell dressed up as a security guard at the NBA game (Picture: Getty)

Hollywood comedian Will Ferrell brightened up a dull basketball match by ejecting NBA legend Shaquille O?Neill from the arena.

Shaq was watching his former teams the Lakers and Phoenix Suns play at the Staples Center in Los Angeles when Ferrell, dressed as in a red jacket worn by the Lakers? security guards, ushered him away from his courtside seat and down a tunnel.

Ferrell, making a sequel to hit comedy Anchorman, had been observing the crowd while wearing his uniform and looked the part although his security accreditation had the name Ted Vagina on it.

It?s not known if he had joined the security crew as a prank or if he was filming a scene for an upcoming project but he certainly had approval from the Lakers to be part of their security.

Shaq went along with the gag and was probably grateful he was ejected as the Lakers beat the Suns 91-85 in a pretty nondescript affair.

G?ngora running for Miami Beach mayor

Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora in 2012.

DANIEL BOCK / FOR THE MIAMI HERALD

Miami Beach Vice Mayor Michael G?ngora on Tuesday announced his long-expected candidacy for mayor.

He made the announcement to a standing-room only crowd at a joint meeting of the Miami Beach Taxpayers Association and the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club, which met at the Shelborne Resort.

?If you don?t think we can do better, vote for someone else,? G?ngora told the crowd.

He will face Commissioner Jerry Libbin, who filed paperwork to run for mayor in December. Libbin, who is president of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, faces term limits unless he runs for mayor.

The mayor?s seat is wide open this election season because current Mayor Matti Herrera Bower is also term-limited out.

On Tuesday, G?ngora laid out a platform of rooting out corruption, tackling the city?s unfunded pension liability, making the city more environmentally-friendly and encouraging more civility on the dais.

?My campaign is going to be about positive messages and how we can move the city forward,? G?ngora said.

Qualifying for the November election doesn?t start till September.

Myrtle Beach Area Blog | Myrtle Beach Vacation Rentals | Garden ...

You probably know that the Myrtle Beach area has long been considered one of the country?s top vacation destinations, and with good reason. ?The combination of sunny beaches, hundreds of restaurants and thousands of activities give families more choices and more variety than most other beaches? combined! ?You may not know, however, that Myrtle Beach has a quieter side? close enough to all of the fabulous activities, but without the crowds and traffic that can take the ?relaxing? out of a vacation.

The prospect of quiet relaxation combined with proximity to all of the Grand Strand?s activities has drawn ?in-the-know? families to the South Strand communities of Garden City Beach and Surfside Beach for years. ?Located just minutes from downtown Myrtle Beach, these closely-knit communities are adjacent to the fishing village of Murrells Inlet, commonly known as the Seafood Capital of South Carolina, and offer vacationers a wide range of accommodations, all with easy access to one of the most beautiful (and uncrowded!) stretches of beach on the Grand Strand.

Back in the early 1970s when Dunes Realty first opened its doors, Surfside Beach was a sleepy little seaside town dotted with beach homes and bungalows, and Garden City Beach still had more vacant lots than houses. ?As Myrtle Beach has grown, so has the South Strand; however, the essential character of both has remained the same. ?Even though you can still walk down the beach on the Fourth of July without tripping over a fellow vacationer, you can also hop in the car and take the short trip to Wild Water Waterpark, Broadway at the Beach or Market Common.

So, if you're looking for a family vacation with something for ALL members of the family, look no further than Garden City Beach, Surfside Beach and Dunes Realty!

Avatars may reduce depression in young adults

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Young adults, in a period of transition, are often reluctant to seek treatment for mental health problems because of the stigma, inadequate insurance coverage and difficulty finding a mental health care provider.

But a new preliminary study by researchers at Case Western Reserve University suggests that depression symptoms may be significantly reduced when 18- to 25-year-olds interact with computerized avatars -- virtual 3D images of a healthcare provider like a nurse practitioner or physician -- as a way to rehearse office visits ahead of time and learn self-management skills.

Study results were published in the current Applied Nursing Research journal article, "Avatar-based depression self-management technology: promising approach to improve depression symptoms among young adults."

Melissa Pinto, PhD, RN, a KL2 Clinical Research Scholar and instructor at Case Western Reserve's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, collaborated with developers of the Electronic Self-Management Resource Training (eSMART) team: Ronald Hickman Jr., PhD, ACNP-BC, and John Clochesy, PhD, RN, FAAN (now at University of Southern Florida) from the nursing school, and Marc Buchner, PhD, from the Virtual Gaming Lab at Case Western Reserve's engineering school.

Pinto said the study was the first to her knowledge to use an avatar-based intervention for this age group to improve depressive symptoms.

The researcher used a Case Western Reserve-designed virtual program, called eSMART-MH. eSMART-MH was adapted from a previous platform (eSMART-HD) designed by the team to help adults with chronic health problems manage their health.

The interactive avatar program, eSMART-MH, was designed in Buchner's Virtual Gaming Lab and tailored for young adults with depressive symptoms. eSMART-MH walks young adults through healthcare appointments with an avatar healthcare provider in virtual primary care office setting. During these visits, young adults practice talking about depression, ask avatar healthcare providers questions and learn self-managements skills to help manage depressive symptoms.

At this age, a majority of young people do not make contact with mental health providers until years after they first experience depressive symptoms. And those who do seek professional help may go to their first few appointments, but stop going soon after, said Pinto, who has studied mental health interventions in adolescents and young adults for six years.

The sample of 28 participants between 18 and 25 years old was small -- considered a preliminary study to gather data for something more extensive.

Pinto randomly divided the participants, recruited from posters in city buses, into two groups: Half used e-SMART-MH, and the other half used electronic screen-based health information.

Before each of four visits over three months, Pinto tested participants for their depression levels to gauge whether they had incorporated coping strategies from information learned at each session.

Prior research reveals that, without some intervention, depression may resolve temporarily, but usually becomes chronic and reoccurs for many years and worsens over a person's life. . In this small pilot study, young adults who received eSMART-MH had a significant reduction in depressive symptoms over the three-month study, and depressive symptoms dropped below level for clinical significance. The young adults who received electronic screen-based information only had no significant change in depressive symptoms during the study. Although the results of this study are promising and exciting, this was the first test of eSMART-MH.

"We are very early in the science. We look forward to assessing the eSMART-MH again in a larger study of young people," Pinto said.

Why Cincinnati Bengals Won't Take a Chance on Manti Te'o in 2013 NFL Draft

The Cincinnati Bengals are a team often linked to former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o as the 2013 NFL draft looms closer.?

Most recently,?Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com mocked Te'o to Cincinnati with the No. 21 overall pick and stated the following reasons:

Is there a team better equipped to handle the Te'o situation? Marvin Lewis has dealt with Chad Johnson/Ochocinco, Terrell Owens, the late Chris Henry, Pacman Jones and Vontaze Burfict. He'll gladly welcome questions about a fake girlfriend. All of the craziness aside, Te'o is a solid player and would fill a need for the Bengals.

The problem with the Bengals taking Te'o in the first round and the explanation provided here is twofold. For one, Cincinnati does not need?an inside linebacker, and two, Te'o is not a good enough prospect to be taken in the first round.?

Should the Bengals draft Manti Te'o?

Should the Bengals draft Manti Te'o?

  • Yes

  • No

Te'o is a big name for off-field issues not even worth diving into at this point. On paper, his stats for his 2012 campaign alone jump off the page and justify a first-round grade. He recorded 111 total tackles on the year to go with seven interceptions.?

The statistics are great at first glance, but looking deeper will reveal some issues.?

Of those 111 tackles, 62 were assists. This means that over half of Te'o's tackles were mostly after a teammate had already made a hit,?insinuating?he is slow to the ball-carrier outside of the hash marks.?

On film. Te'o is simply average. Bleacher Report's very own Sigmund Bloom broke down Te'o in a report recently. and pointed out some of Te'o's issues, including his lack of speed:

Te'o?does not have legitimate sideline-to-sideline range, but his size makes him ideal for inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, where range is not as important. He has a decent motor and is generally moving toward the ball until the whistle.

Instincts are not his strength, as?Te'o?appears to be guessing or reacting to what is happening instead of anticipating on most plays. He often guesses wrong or is a beat late from making a play, but?Te'o?still disrupts enough to be a catalyst for his teammates to make plays.?

As Bloom points out, Te'o lacks ideal speed and has issues diagnosing what an opposing offense is doing. This means he is extremely?vulnerable?to misdirections and the?play action, even more so at the professional level. It also means he is best suited for a 3-4 defense?Cincinnati employs a 4-3 under Mike Zimmer.?

Bloom also goes on to point out that Te'o does not receive enough credit in coverage, and that he does well in zone as long as "they are not speedsters." The problem is, all NFL slot receivers are speedsters, and the new breed of tight ends taking over the league are?eerily?fast and have great size as well.?

Ignoring the issue that Te'o is hardly worth a first-round pick, it also goes without saying that the Bengals do not need an inside linebacker. Yes, Rey Maualuga is a free agent and may not be brought back.?

Regardless of whether or not Maualuga is brought back, it is widely believed that Vontaze Burfict will slide to his more natural position in the middle next year.?Burfict was explosive after going undrafted and racked up 127 tackles and one sack at weak-side linebacker.?

Burfict sliding over means the Bengals will have a need at the weak-side spot. Cincinnati will likely attempt to bring back Thomas Howard if he's healthy; Howard missed most of last season after injuring himself in practice.

Burfict would have likely replaced Maualuga in the middle in 2012 if Howard had remained healthy. Howard is far and away the best linebacker on the roster when healthy.?

The biggest need for the Bengals in the linebacker corps is at strong- or weak-side linebacker, depending on the fate of Howard. Head coach Marvin Lewis is still desperately searching for a pass-rushing linebacker after the failed experiment with Dontay Moch. As we have already diagnosed, Te'o is strictly a middle linebacker in the NFL.?

In fact, the Bengals and most of the fanbase are intent on replacing a player like Maualuga in the middle. On film, Te'o is not all that different from Maualuga during his days at USC before Cincinnati took a risk on him in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft.?

Replacing Maualuga with a very similar player such as Te'o does not scream forward progress for the franchise.?

It is common to see troubled players mocked to the Bengals. After all, Marvin Lewis has made a habit of taking problem players and creating a nice redemption story. Stories such as Adam Jones and Burfict come to mind, just to name a few.?

Te'o will not be given a Marvin Lewis redemption trip with the Bengals unless he plummets drastically during the draft?even then he might not land in Cincinnati. He does not fit a need and is not good enough to come in and make a difference?immediately.?

Under the tutelage of Lewis, the Bengals have strung together outstanding draft classes over the past few years. The 2013 NFL draft should be no different, and avoiding Te'o will be key to another quality class.?

Egyptians protest on anniversary of Mubarak's fall

CAIRO (AP) ? Security forces sprayed protesters with water hoses and tear gas outside the presidential palace as Egyptians marked the second anniversary of the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak's with angry demonstrations against his elected successor.

The forces were trying to disperse a small crowd of protesters on Monday evening, after some of them attempted to cross a barbed wire barrier meant to block them from the palace gate. Some protesters chanted: "The people want to bring down the regime." Others threw stones.

Graffiti scribbled on the palace walls read: "Erhal" or "Leave," the chant that echoed through Cairo's central Tahrir Square during the 18-day uprising that ended with Mubarak stepping down on Feb. 11, 2011.

Earlier, masked men briefly blocked trains at a central Cairo subway station and a dozen other protesters blocked traffic with burning tires on a main overpass in Cairo. Hundreds rallied outside the office of the country's chief prosecutor, demanding justice and retribution for protesters killed in clashes with security forces after Islamist President Mohammed Morsi took office last summer.

The protesters lobbed plastic bags filled with red liquid at the prosecutor's office to recall the blood spilled by civilians in clashes with security forces. The prosecutor's appointment by Morsi was criticized as a violation of the judiciary's independence. Another group of protesters locked shut the doors of the main administrative building for state services just outside the subway station at Tahrir Square.

Egypt has been gripped by political turmoil since Mubarak's ouster, in an uprising driven largely by anger over widespread abuse at the hands of state security agencies. After he stepped down, Mubarak was replaced by a ruling military council that was in power for 17 months. The rule of the generals was marred by violence and criticism that the council mismanaged the transitional period.

Morsi won the first free elections in June. But he and his Muslim Brotherhood, which rose to be Egypt's most powerful political group post-Mubarak, are now facing the wrath of Egyptians who drove the 2011 revolt but who say few of their goals have been realized.

For many in Egypt, the past two years have only increased frustration, with the economy deteriorating as political bickering between a largely secular opposition and a tightly organized and conservative Islamist bloc obstructed progress.

Protesters are particularly angry over the continued heavy handedness of security services, claiming little has changed since the Mubarak era. Many accuse Morsi and the Brotherhood of trying to monopolize power and ignoring the demands of the secular and liberal groups who were the backbone of the uprising.

On Monday, government opponents marched to Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the uprising, which has been sealed off by protesters since November. Others went to the presidential palace. Hundreds also marched through the streets of Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city.

"Of course I feel disappointed. Every day it's getting worse," said Ahmed Mohamed, a 20-year-old engineering student protesting outside the presidential palace. "The economy is even worse and all government institutions are collapsing. Morsi won't even acknowledge this."

Doaa Mustafa, a 33-year-old housewife, said she is willing to stay on the streets until Morsi steps down, as Mubarak did.

"We're here so that Mohammed Morsi, the dictator, will leave. He is just as bad as Mubarak, if not worse."

The protesters are also demanding the amendment of the country's new constitution. They claim that Islamists rushed the charter through the approval process despite disagreement with the opposition. The result, they say, was a charter that undermines freedoms of expression and belief and chips away at women rights.

Some protesters are also demanding a new Cabinet, accusing the current government of being ineffective and failing to rein in police abuses or institute economic reforms. One of the most heated issues for protesters remains a lack of accountability for those responsible for the deaths of hundreds of civilians during protests against the state.

Morsi and his supporters have repeatedly dismissed the opposition's charges, accusing the opposition and Mubarak supporters alike of trying to topple a democratically elected president.

After seven months in office, Morsi's popularity has fallen some 10 percent to 53 percent, according to pollster Magued Osman of the Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research. The poll was conducted via telephone interviews with more than 2,300 participants and had a margin of error of less than 3 percent. Only 39 percent of those polled said they would elect Morsi again if there were new elections, compared to 50 percent a month earlier.

Prominent opposition figure Amr Moussa urged Morsi to reconsider his views of the opposition, telling a late night TV program on Sunday that it is "the wrong assessment" to view the rising street anger against Morsi as a "conspiracy" to topple him.

An increasingly violent wave of protests has spread outside of the capital in recent weeks as political initiatives failed to assuage the anger.

The recent explosion of violence began on the second anniversary of the start of the uprising on Jan.25.

It accelerated with riots in the Suez Canal city of Port Said by youths furious over death sentences issued against local soccer fans over a bloody stadium riot a year ago. Around 70 were killed in this wave of clashes, while violent mob attacks against women protesters increasingly marred gatherings at Tahrir Square.

On Monday, members of the human rights commission of the Islamist-dominated legislative assembly said women should have specific areas for protesting, criticizing them for rallying among men and in areas considered unsafe. They called for the passing of a new law to regulate protesting, and enable the police to protect women, according to the state news agency MENA.

Crowds at Monday's protests were relatively small and the violence muted.

Also on Monday, the U.S. urged protesters and security forces to show restraint and renewed a call for dialogue.

"We continue to support a broad dialogue between Egypt's leaders and the various political stakeholders to work through the various issues of concern, because there needs to be a strong national consensus in Egypt about the way forward," said U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. "We want to see peace on the street."

Vodafone UK warns its iPhone 4S users not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 due to possible 3G problems

Vodafone UK warning its iPhone 4S users not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 due to 3G problemsUK network Vodafone is warning users of iPhone 4S handsets on its network to avoid upgrading to iOS 6.1. Vodafone is sending out text messages to its users as well as issuing a statement that claims Apple is already working on a fix for the problem. Apparently it is only affecting iPhone 4S users and is an intermittent 3G problem causing failed calls and texts as well as internet access problems.

We?re aware of an issue caused by Apple iPhone 4s handsets that have been upgraded to iOS 6.1 which impacts performance on 3G.

Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.

While Apple?s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4s should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that their problem has been fixed.

We know that Apple has already released iOS 6.1.1 beta to developers for testing and maybe this contains the fix that Vodafone is referring to. As with any new release of iOS firmware there are always many differing reports especially when it comes to battery performance. This release has been no different in that respect however the fact that Vodafone felt the need to publicly comment on this particular 3G problem does mean it could well be a major problem for many on its network.

My wife actually has an iPhone 4S on the Vodafone network in the UK and it is updated to iOS 6.1. Her iPhone is working perfectly with no sign of any issues with 3G. If there are any other readers on Vodafone in the UK experiencing any issues, please let us know in the comments!

Yemen: Seized Iranian ship carried varied weapons

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? A ship seized by Yemeni authorities last month carried a wide variety of Iranian-made weapons, Yemen's Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

They included material for bombs and suicide belts, explosives, Katyusha rockets, surface-to-air missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and large amounts of ammunition.

In a statement, the ministry detailed contents of the Iranian ship seized in Yemen's territorial waters in mid-January. It described contents as "large, diverse and dangerous" weapons that also included night vision binoculars and goggles, remote devices, circuits, wires and rifle silencers.

Yemen state TV showed Interior Minister Abdel-Qader Kahtan and top military officials inspecting the ship, named Jihan 1, docked at Aden port in southern Yemen.

In Washington, U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, "this is obviously extremely troubling." She added, "we commend the Yemenis on their interdiction's success."

The Yemeni news agency reported that Yemen's coast guard intercepted the ship in an operation coordinated with the U.S. Navy. It said that the vessel's eight crew members were Yemenis.

Yemen has recently witnessed several cases of illegal arms shipments through its porous shores on the Red and Arabian seas.

Yemen is home to an active branch of al-Qaida, which staged several failed or foiled attacks on U.S. territory over the past several years. Washington considers al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula as the terror group's most dangerous branch.

Yemen's government, backed by the U.S., has carried out a wide offensive against al-Qaida strongholds in the south, driving militants out of cities and towns. The militants retaliated with a series of assassinations of top military and security officials in addition to deadly suicide attacks in the capital and in the south.

At the same time, U.S. drone strikes have killed scores of suspected al-Qaida militants.

Senators see path to immigrants' legalization

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Illegal immigrants might face around a 10-year wait to become legal permanent U.S. residents under sweeping immigration overhaul legislation taking shape in the Senate, negotiators said Thursday. That's shorter than some current wait times though perhaps longer than some advocates might like.

Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Robert Menendez of New Jersey discussed the timeline in a roundtable meeting with Spanish-language reporters. The senators and their aides emphasized that nothing has been agreed to and the timeline could change.

The timeline refers to how long someone would have to wait in a new provisional legal status before qualifying for permanent residency and a green card. The legislation is expected to immediately grant provisional legal status to many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants now in the country, but they couldn't get green cards until the border has been secured, and they would have to meet criteria including learning English and paying fines.

The process "is likely to be in the range of 10 years, I say in the range because we have not nailed this down," Durbin said. He said various factors go into the timeline, including the need to establish border security first, something Republicans have insisted on.

Menendez said a 10-year wait would not be inordinate considering that under current law many illegal immigrants face a 10-year prohibition against returning to the country if they leave.

"If you think about it, under current law there is a 10-year bar, so the bottom line is you would have to wait anyway," Menendez said. "The difference is you would get the opportunity to be here, to come forward, to work, to travel, and in doing so to earn your pathway" to citizenship.

A green card is the crucial first step toward citizenship although it takes up to five years for a green card holder to become a citizen under current law.

The emerging legislation, which faces an uncertain future in Congress, is expected to require illegal immigrants to go to the back of the line to petition for citizenship behind those already attempting the process. That means some length of wait would be inevitable, although experts said lawmakers could shorten the wait times by making more green cards available.

"Going to the back of the line is inevitably a lengthy process because of current backlogs for which there have been insufficient numbers of visas in current law," said Doris Meissner, a senior fellow at the Migration Policy Institute.

Wait times vary greatly under current law for people to get green cards, depending on factors including what country they're from. For Mexicans trying to join family members legally in the U.S. the wait time can be 12 to 15 years, Meissner said.

The exact process and length of time for an illegal immigrant to get a green card is just one of many contentious issues being discussed by Durbin, Menendez and six other senators in a bipartisan group trying to finalize an immigration bill by spring. Even if they succeed the bill faces a tough road in the Democratic-controlled Senate and an even tougher one in the Republican-led House.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., another negotiator on the legislation, emphasized no decisions have been made. "Nothing has been decided yet with respect to the path to citizenship," Schumer said through a spokesman in response to the comments from Durbin and Menendez.
