ANN ARBOR: Hands-On Museum hosting 'Hot and Cold' themed events, Google Maps display (with video)

There are some hot and cold times being had over the winter break at the Hands-On Museum in Ann Arbor.

The museum is again hosting daily events for its Hands-On Holiday extravaganza. The theme this year is "Hot and Cold," and everyone is invited to participate. The idea is that winter can be fun.

The museum is at 220 E. Ann St. and offers about 250 exhibits patrons can interact with and possibly open a new world to the participants. This year's theme asks people to get a handle on hot things, cold things and everything in between, and to enjoy science.

Activities this year include making ice candles, experiencing hot and cold chemistry, seeing heat through an infrared camera, using math to solve wintry challenges, learning about holidays around the world, and a hot and cold memory game.

The activities are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays and New Year's Day. The event runs through Jan. 7.

"This is for people of all ages," Executive Director Mel Drumm said, "from 2 years old to seniors."

Even if you've been to the museum before, there is always a new experience waiting, Drumm said. Some of the exhibits include a Google-sponsored booth that shows the entire Earth on seven monitors. The program is tied to Google Earth, giving the display a three-dimensional feel.

Patrons can rotate the image, enlarge it, rotate it or shrink it to learn about geography. It's the only of its kind in the region, Drumm said.

"You can see your very own house," he said.

The museum focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Drumm said. But it also incorporates art because children who are exposed to the creative side learn better, he said. Continued...

Other exhibits include a Kaleidagraph that allows users to create images using an iPad application. The images can be saved and uploaded to the museum's website and then downloaded at home. All of the different creations and patterns will expand the memory of the system.

There is also an infrared camera that shows the heat people generate. The image is like that seen in the old "Predator" movies. The camera tracks movement and relays it to a big monitor.

Barley Hranko, 5, created snow angels on the floor and watched himself on the monitor.

"One of the beautiful things that happen here is that we like hands-on demonstrations for visitors," Drumm said. "We like to engage our full-time staff members, part-time staff members, and people in our community who like volunteering."

An example of the volunteer aspect was 16-year-old Xuvrui Pepay of Ann Arbor who was demonstrating endothermic reactions using lemon juice and baking soda. An endothermic reaction is a chemical reaction accompanied by the absorption of heat.

Teenagers can find plenty to do at the museum, including how to program apps and HAM radio, he said.

The museum is a popular attraction. Drumm said it's at is busiest between 1 and 2 p.m. This year, the museum attracted a record 262,000 people.

The museum just celebrated its 30th year in October.

"We are closing in on 5 million people who have been here or been involved in our programs over time," Drumm said. "We are in the schools all through Michigan. We do tours in the Upper Peninsula. We broadcast through the Internet around the country. Continued...

"Our exhibits travel to libraries and schools, and other museums. It's really a great reach."

Mitt Romney ?had no desire to run,? son says

Mitt Romney hugs his son, Tagg, at a campaign stop. (AP/File)

Mitt Romney didn't want to be president, anyway.

That's what Tagg Romney, Mitt's oldest son, told the Boston Globe for its big post-mortem on his father's failed presidential bid published on Sunday.

?He wanted to be president less than anyone I?ve met in my life," Tagg Romney told the paper. "He had no desire to ... run. If he could have found someone else to take his place ... he would have been ecstatic to step aside.

"He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them," Tagg continued. "He has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn?t love the attention.?

Romney's reluctance to become commander in chief has been hinted at by his sons before. Before their father sought the 2012 GOP nomination, several said they tried to convince him not to run.

"I tried to convince him not to," Matt Romney told Conan O'Brien in June. "I think there were a few of us that tried that. I just felt for us as a family, this isn't the best thing. But ... for the country, we think it's the right thing."

How Do You Start A Windstorm With Two Years To Go In A Lease ...

Leases frequently provide that either party can terminate them if damage is caused by a casualty in the last two years of the lease term. This could serve as an incentive for such a ?casualty? to take place, and hence the question we ask. Yes, a cheap trick.

Last week, we opened this topic by ruminating about the ?measure? to be used when figuring out just ?how badly? a building or the leased space had been ?damaged? in the context of whether either a landlord or its tenant can ?bail out? of a lease. We suggested that the measure should be based on how long it would take to repair, not how much of the property or the leased space was affected (or even how much it might cost). While one reader asked, legitimately we might add, ?why should a landlord be able to terminate the lease at all,? no one asked whether there was some threshold of physical damage, such as 50%, that would ?change the game? such that it would be reasonable to relieve a landlord from the obligation to rebuild for the tenant. Other than what we?ll cover as today?s specific issue, we?ll try to cover those questions next time, pausing now only to say that we aren?t unaware of the impact of zoning or building code changes that might have taken place after a building was first put up.

Today, we?re going to look at only one facet of the ?should a landlord ever be able to terminate the lease? question. It deals with the last ?two? years of the lease term. That could be the last year or the last three years or whatever time period you?d like. In fact, the suggestion we?ll be making takes that selected period into account.

A good way to illustrate the reason why Ruminations thinks a landlord should be able to terminate a lease based on serious fire or similar damage toward the end of the lease term is the following. Suppose a building and the leased space within it are damaged by fire with only six months left in the lease term and it will take five months to restore them. At that point, the tenant will have but one month to go and it might take a month or more for the tenant to get ready to reopen, even if needing to do nothing more than re-fixture and restock. Does it make sense to rush the rebuilding to get it done in five months? Does it make sense to be locked into the ?old? configuration for the building and leased space with only a month to go? Of course not ? it would be an economic waste.

On the other hand, if the fire happened with two years to go, and it took a month to restore, there would still be 23 months of usable space. Even if the fire happened at the six month mark, if it would only take two weeks to restore the space, it seems pretty logical that the lease should continue.

Commonly used ?lease language? doesn?t really handle these scenarios very well. What we usually see is something like this: ?Either party can terminate this Lease if either the Demised Premises or the Building is damaged by fire or other cause within the last two years of the Term and the damage is to more than 40% of either the Building or the Demised Premises.? As we pointed out last week, you can flood 100% of the leased space and get back in business in five days. At the other end of the possible hypothetical situations, you can have damage to 35% of the leased space (assuming you can figure out what that really means) happening six months before the end of the lease term where it takes five months to restore the space. That?s what we described two paragraphs above.

So, what does Ruminations suggest? Try the following:

X. If, within the last two (2) years of this Lease: (a) the Building (including the Demised Premises) is damaged by fire or through any other cause; and (b) in the written opinion of a [Name of State] licensed architect who has at least fifteen (15) years? experience in the design and architectural supervision of retail [or industrial, if applicable] buildings it would take more than twenty five percent (25%) of the number of days remaining in the Term (measured from the date of damage) to repair or restore the Building when acting diligently, then at the option of either Landlord or Tenant, which shall be exercised by notice in writing given to the other within thirty (30) days after occurrence of such damage or destruction, this Lease shall terminate and no rent shall be paid by Tenant for the period subsequent to the date of such damage or destruction; provided, however, that if at the time Tenant receives Landlord?s notice of termination pursuant to the preceding sentence Tenant shall have an option to extend the current Term for a period of at least five (5) years and if Tenant so exercises its option to extend within sixty (60) days after receipt of Landlord?s notice of termination, this Lease shall not terminate and Landlord shall be obligated to repair or restore as aforesaid (but subject to the provisions of [possible other limitations in the Lease ? not any that say the tenant can?t exercise its option ?too soon?]). If this Lease shall terminate as aforesaid and any rent shall have been paid in advance, Landlord agrees to refund to Tenant all rent so paid applicable to the period subsequent to such damage or destruction. Upon any such termination, Tenant and Landlord each shall be released from any further liability under this Lease for anything accruing or first occurring after the event of damage or destruction. In the event Landlord terminates this Lease as hereinabove provided and thereafter restores the Building within one (1) year from the termination of this Lease, Landlord hereby grants to Tenant the right to lease the Demised Premises for the balance of the remaining Term of this Lease, plus any unexercised extension rights set forth in this Lease, on the same terms and conditions as set forth in this Lease. Landlord shall notify Tenant when the Building is substantially restored and Tenant shall have thirty (30) days to notify Landlord of its election to lease the Demised Premises.

We are well aware that elements of our sample lease provision raise important business issues, such as the right to reoccupy some later constructed or restored leased space if the landlord terminates the lease (as a pretext to shed two years of less than market rent). Readers can ?play with those.?

Astute followers of Ruminations will note that while the language suggested above is informed by last week?s suggestion that the obligation to restore be measured by the time it takes to do so, using a test measured by the number of days that would be left in the lease term incorporates an economic rent-based concept. We think that using this formula to determine how many ?days? to use impliedly takes into account how much rent will be payable once the premises are restored. Factoring in the ?economic? burden makes sense to us. Where there is a lot of time to go in the lease term, we believe the tenant has the greater economic interest in the space ? it has built a business and had bargained to use this particular location until a given date. The value to the tenant of being able to stay in the space diminishes as the ?end? of the term approaches. After all, the tenant?s amortization of improvements and locational good will are diminishing. If there isn?t a lot of time left in the lease term, it will have to move anyway. On the other hand, the landlord is being asked to restore the leased space as it was. If that cost a lot to do, its ?economic? interest in when the lease ends increases as the expiration date looms. Basically, we see it as a balancing test of the two parties? respective interests.

So, that?s why we have ?switched? to ?hybrid? test. We think there is a point in time when the critical analysis when ?money? starts to play a meaningful role. Our approach today also respects the ?time? element by using ?time? as the trigger for the ?switch.? It doesn?t have to be at the two year point. Though that is a common ?trigger,? there are properties and situations where a shorter or longer ?switch? point would make sense.

As always, Ruminations invites, yea urges, readers to pipe in by clicking where it says ?comments? just below the headline to today?s posting.

Ex-U.S. Marine jailed in Mexico wins back his freedom

MIAMI (Reuters) - A former U.S. Marine jailed in a notoriously violent part of northern Mexico was released on Friday after being held prisoner four months for possessing a shotgun that was a family heirloom, according to a member of the U.S. Congress.

After speaking with the family of Jon Hammar, U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida said she was able to confirm the 27-year-old man had been released "and is back safely in the United States."

Olivia Hammar of Miami, the mother of the Iraq War veteran, said Mexican authorities had decided to drop all charges against her troubled son, whose case grabbed the U.S. media spotlight and stirred controversy earlier this month, after determining that he never intended to commit a crime in Mexico.

The decision to release Hammar was announced in a press release on Friday morning from the office of Florida Senator Bill Nelson, who said he got the news from the Mexican Embassy in Washington.

"We're grateful; this is a good Christmas present," Nelson said.

Hammar was heading to Costa Rica to go surfing when he crossed into Matamoros, Mexico, from Brownsville, Texas, in mid-August in a beat-up old Winnebago motor home he and a friend bought especially for the trip.

He had registered the shotgun with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials on the U.S. side of the border, declaring he planned to take it with him into Mexico.

Despite being told that the shotgun, a Sear & Roebuck model that once belonged to his great-grandfather, posed no problem, Hammar was arrested as soon as he crossed into Mexico. The arrest came when he tried to register the gun with Mexican customs officials, Olivia Hammar said.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said Hammar was charged with possession of a deadly weapon. The family lawyer, Eddie Varon-Levy, had said Hammar faced up to 12 years in prison if he was found guilty.

Making matters worse, Hammar suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from his combat experience and the death of a fellow Marine who was killed by a sniper's bullet when the two served together in Falluja, Iraq. He had just completed treatment for PTSD at a center for veterans in California last year.

His ordeal in Matamoros, in one of the most violent parts of Mexico, included being shackled to a bed and receiving death threats and extortion demands from drug cartel gangsters who run the prison like their personal fiefdom, Hammar's parents said.

Olivia Hammar said her husband, Jon Hammar Sr., had flown down to south Texas from Miami to pick up his son at or near the prison.

Obama calls for smaller-scale budget deal with GOP

Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, speaks to reporters about the fiscal cliff negotiations at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. Hopes for avoiding the "fiscal cliff" that threatens the U.S. economy fell Friday after fighting among congressional Republicans cast doubt on whether any deal reached with President Barack Obama could win approval ahead of automatic tax increases and deep spending cuts kick in Jan. 1. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has throttled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain with Republicans. Instead, he's calling for a scaled-back measure sufficient to prevent the government from careening off the "fiscal cliff" in January by extending tax cuts for most taxpayers and forestalling a painful set of agency budget cuts.

In a White House appearance Friday, Obama also called on Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

Obama's announcement was a recognition that chances for a larger agreement before year's end have probably collapsed. It also suggested that any chance for a smaller deal may rest in the Senate, particularly after the collapse of a plan by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to permit tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes.

"In the next few days, I've asked leaders of Congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle-class Americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million Americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction," Obama said. "That's an achievable goal. That can get done in 10 days."

Maybe, maybe not. The latest plan faces uncertainty at best in the sharply divided Senate. GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who wields great power even in the minority, called Friday for Senate action on a House bill from the summer extending the full menu of Bush-era tax cuts. He promised that it will take GOP votes for anything to clear the Senate, where 60 votes are required to advance most legislation. Democrats control 53 votes.

Earlier, Boehner said Obama needs to give more ground to reach an agreement and that both he and Obama had indicated in a Monday telephone call that their latest offers represented their bottom lines. "How we get there," he added, "God only knows."

Congress shut down for Christmas and Obama flew to Hawaii with his family for the holidays. But both men indicated they'd be back in Washington, working to beat the fast-approaching Jan. 1 deadline with an agreement between Christmas and New Year's.

Obama announced his plans after talking by phone with Boehner and meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who had previously pinned his hopes on an Obama-Boehner agreement and is wary of dealing with McConnell.

At the White House, Obama projected optimism despite of weeks of failed negotiations. "Call me a hopeless optimist, but I actually still think we can get it done," he said.

Boehner spoke in the morning, describing the increasingly tangled attempts to beat the Jan. 1 deadline and head off the perilous combination of across-the-board tax hikes and deep spending cuts.

"Because of the political divide in the country, because of the divide here in Washington, trying to bridge these differences has been difficult," Boehner said. "If it were easy, I guarantee you this would have been done decades before."

Obama said that in his negotiations with Boehner, he had offered to meet Republicans halfway when it came to taxes and "more than halfway" toward their target for spending cuts.

It's clear, however, that there's great resistance in GOP ranks to forging a bargain with Obama along the lines of a possible agreement that almost seemed at hand just a few days ago: tax hikes at or just over $1 trillion over 10 years, matched by comparable cuts to federal health care programs, Social Security benefits and across federal agency operating budgets.

Obama said he remains committed to working toward a goal of longer-term deficit reduction to reduce chronic trillion-dollar deficits while keeping tax rates in place for nearly everyone.

"Even though Democrats and Republicans are arguing about whether those rates should go up for the wealthiest individuals, all of us ? every single one of us ? agrees that tax rates shouldn't go up for the other 98 percent of Americans," Obama said, citing statistics associated with his promise to protect household income under $250,000 from higher tax rates.

Neither the House nor the Senate is expected to meet again until after Christmas. Officials in both parties said there was still time to prevent the changes from kicking in with the new year.

The week began amid optimism that Obama and Boehner had finally begun to significantly narrow their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few, and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a provision to scale back future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession by the president that inflamed many liberals..

GOP officials said some senior Republicans such as Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., the most recent Republican vice presidential nominee, opposed the possible agreement. But No. 2 House Republican Eric Cantor of Virginia has joined arms with Boehner.

Boehner stepped back and announced what he called Plan B, legislation to let tax rates rise on incomes of $1 million or more while preventing increases for all other taxpayers.

Despite statements of confidence, he and his lieutenants decided late Thursday they were not going to be able to secure the votes needed to pass the measure in the face of opposition from conservatives unwilling to violate decades-old party orthodoxy never to raise tax rates.

The retreat came after it became clear that too many Republicans feared "the perception that somebody might accuse them of raising taxes," Boehner said.

Boehner also said that last Monday he had told Obama he had submitted his bottom-line proposal.

"The president told me that his numbers ? the $1.3 trillion in new revenues, $850 billion in spending cuts ? was his bottom line, that he couldn't go any further."

That contradicted remarks by White House press secretary Jay Carney, who said on Thursday that Obama has "never said either in private or in public that this was his final offer. He understands that to reach a deal it would require some further negotiation. There is not much further he could go."

Daily Kos: Liability Insurance for Guns

The difference, of course, is that guns are made to kill, as I argued the other day in another diary. Entire laboratories devote their energies to making bullets more deadly, sights more accurate, and the weapons themselves lighter and easier to carry.

We're not going to get to serious gun control measures until we deal with the reality that the gun industry has successfully, over roughly two decades, managed to convince society that semiautomatic handguns and rifles are mere "toys." And clearly they are not toys.

Here's where liability insurance comes in. We all know that cars are consumer items, with lots of great features and often fun to drive. But they are heavy projectiles that can, in the wrong hands, do a lot of damage. Liability insurance makes car owners more careful about who drives their car, and when and in what condition.

Requiring separate liability insurance for each gun, at the point of purchase, will hold gun owners responsible for where their gun is and who is using it. (I'm talking about a policy that covers weapons specifically, rather than merely grouping them under umbrella insurance). It will encourage owners to buy safety locks, and to stow their weapons carefully, and probably separately from their ammunition. It may also slow the stockpiling of weapons, which has been a frightening development in recent years.

Gun ownership may be a recreational thing. As one gun owner put it in the Times article,

?It?s a challenge to see how well you can do....It?s like bowling or any other kind of sport. You want to see if you can do it better the next time.?
I see the appeal of target shooting. I get it. I don't want to deny anyone a challenge or a way to relieve stress. But if liability insurance will make it harder for that gun to get into someone else's hands, I'm all for it.

6:19 AM PT: Thanks for the rec list and for the great comments and debate below. ?And hat tip to cosmic debris for links to articles on the subject that I hadn?t seen:

For Your On the internet Company | Suave

Regardless of whether you select to design a site from scratch or use a free Web template to design a web site for your on-line business, there are a lot of factors to ask oneself ahead of you get began:

1. Do you program on promoting goods on your web site? Will you need to have a shopping cart to gather payments?

two. Do you program on displaying articles or obtaining a weblog?

3. Do you strategy on getting advertising on your web site?

four. Does the website design want to be interactive for web site visitors?

five. Do you want to run your web site by way of a content material management program (CMS)?

6. Does the site need to incorporate an audio or video player?

7. Would your target marketplace appreciate a flashy design, or one thing basic?

When youve answered these questions, its time to design a website for your on the internet enterprise. There are a few general alternatives to consider when deciding how to design a web site:

1. Employ a expert Web designer and/or Web programmer to generate a custom Internet style and backend system or e-commerce answer, like any essential tools. You can locate great programmers and designers at sites such as ?and ?When you post a project on either of these services be sure not to decide on a bidder just simply because they are the cheapest. Decide on an individual with a extremely extended history of positive feedback.

2. Design a website oneself if you currently have the Web design and coding skills (or take the time to learn HMTL/XHTML/CSS/PHP and so forth.). I only suggest this option if you are extremely technical and really fast. Your time is best spent on creating your company not studying the facts of internet style ? unless, of course, you want to get into the business of internet design.

AP IMPACT: Big Pharma cashes in on HGH abuse

A federal crackdown on illicit foreign supplies of human growth hormone has failed to stop rampant misuse, and instead has driven record sales of the drug by some of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies, an Associated Press investigation shows.

The crackdown, which began in 2006, reduced the illegal flow of unregulated supplies from China, India and Mexico.

But since then, Big Pharma has been satisfying the steady desires of U.S. users and abusers, including many who take the drug in the false hope of delaying the effects of aging.

From 2005 to 2011, inflation-adjusted sales of HGH were up 69 percent, according to an AP analysis of pharmaceutical company data collected by the research firm IMS Health. Sales of the average prescription drug rose just 12 percent in that same period.

___

EDITOR'S NOTE ? Whether for athletics or age, Americans from teenagers to baby boomers are trying to get an edge by illegally using anabolic steroids and human growth hormone, despite well-documented risks. This is the second of a two-part series.

___

Unlike other prescription drugs, HGH may be prescribed only for specific uses. U.S. sales are limited by law to treat a rare growth defect in children and a handful of uncommon conditions like short bowel syndrome or Prader-Willi syndrome, a congenital disease that causes reduced muscle tone and a lack of hormones in sex glands.

The AP analysis, supplemented by interviews with experts, shows too many sales and too many prescriptions for the number of people known to be suffering from those ailments. At least half of last year's sales likely went to patients not legally allowed to get the drug. And U.S. pharmacies processed nearly double the expected number of prescriptions.

Peddled as an elixir of life capable of turning middle-aged bodies into lean machines, HGH ? a synthesized form of the growth hormone made naturally by the human pituitary gland ? winds up in the eager hands of affluent, aging users who hope to slow or even reverse the aging process.

Experts say these folks don't need the drug, and may be harmed by it. The supposed fountain-of-youth medicine can cause enlargement of breast tissue, carpal tunnel syndrome and swelling of hands and feet. Ironically, it also can contribute to aging ailments like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Others in the medical establishment also are taking a fat piece of the profits ? doctors who fudge prescriptions, as well as pharmacists and distributors who are content to look the other way. HGH also is sold directly without prescriptions, as new-age snake oil, to patients at anti-aging clinics that operate more like automated drug mills.

Years of raids, sports scandals and media attention haven't stopped major drugmakers from selling a whopping $1.4 billion worth of HGH in the U.S. last year. That's more than industry-wide annual gross sales for penicillin or prescription allergy medicine. Anti-aging HGH regimens vary greatly, with a yearly cost typically ranging from $6,000 to $12,000 for three to six self-injections per week.

Across the U.S., the medication is often dispensed through prescriptions based on improper diagnoses, carefully crafted to exploit wiggle room in the law restricting use of HGH, the AP found.

HGH is often promoted on the Internet with the same kind of before-and-after photos found in miracle diet ads, along with wildly hyped claims of rapid muscle growth, loss of fat, greater vigor, and other exaggerated benefits to adults far beyond their physical prime. Sales also are driven by the personal endorsement of celebrities such as actress Suzanne Somers.

Pharmacies that once risked prosecution for using unauthorized, foreign HGH ? improperly labeled as raw pharmaceutical ingredients and smuggled across the border ? now simply dispense name brands, often for the same banned uses. And usually with impunity.

Eight companies have been granted permission to market HGH by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which reviews the benefits and risks of new drug products. By contrast, three companies are approved for the diabetes drug insulin.

The No. 1 maker, Roche subsidiary Genentech, had nearly $400 million in HGH sales in the U.S. last year, up an inflation-adjusted two-thirds from 2005. Pfizer and Eli Lilly were second and third with $300 million and $220 million in sales, respectively, according to IMS Health. Pfizer now gets more revenue from its HGH brand, Genotropin, than from Zoloft, its well-known depression medicine that lost patent protection.

On their face, the numbers make no sense to the recognized hormone doctors known as endocrinologists who provide legitimate HGH treatment to a small number of patients.

Endocrinologists estimate there are fewer than 45,000 U.S. patients who might legitimately take HGH. They would be expected to use roughly 180,000 prescriptions or refills each year, given that typical patients get three months' worth of HGH at a time, according to doctors and distributors.

Yet U.S. pharmacies last year supplied almost twice that much HGH ? 340,000 orders ? according to AP's analysis of IMS Health data.

While doctors say more than 90 percent of legitimate patients are children with stunted growth, 40 percent of 442 U.S. side-effect cases tied to HGH over the last year involved people age 18 or older, according to an AP analysis of FDA data. The average adult's age in those cases was 53, far beyond the prime age for sports. The oldest patients were in their 80s.

Some of these medical records even give explicit hints of use to combat aging, justifying treatment with reasons like fatigue, bone thinning and "off-label," which means treatment of an unapproved condition

Even Medicare, the government health program for older Americans, allowed 22,169 HGH prescriptions in 2010, a five-year increase of 78 percent, according to data released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in response to an AP public records request.

"There's no question: a lot gets out," said hormone specialist Dr. Mark Molitch of Northwestern University, who helped write medical standards meant to limit HGH treatment to legitimate patients.

And those figures don't include HGH sold directly by doctors without prescriptions at scores of anti-aging medical practices and clinics around the country. Those numbers could only be tallied by drug makers, who have declined to say how many patients they supply and for what conditions.

First marketed in 1985 for children with stunted growth, HGH was soon misappropriated by adults intent on exploiting its modest muscle- and bone-building qualities. Congress limited HGH distribution to the handful of rare conditions in an extraordinary 1990 law, overriding the generally unrestricted right of doctors to prescribe medicines as they see fit.

Despite the law, illicit HGH spread around the sports world in the 1990s, making deep inroads into bodybuilding, college athletics, and professional leagues from baseball to cycling. The even larger banned market among older adults has flourished more recently.

FDA regulations ban the sale of HGH as an anti-aging drug. In fact, since 1990, prescribing it for things like weight loss and strength conditioning has been punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison.

Steve Kleppe, of Scottsdale, Ariz., a restaurant entrepreneur who has taken HGH for almost 15 years to keep feeling young, said he noticed a price jump of about 25 percent after the block on imports. He now buys HGH directly from a doctor at an annual cost of about $8,000 for himself and the same amount for his wife.

Many older patients go for HGH treatment to scores of anti-aging practices and clinics heavily concentrated in retirement states like Florida, Nevada, Arizona and California.

These sites are affiliated with hundreds of doctors who are rarely endocrinologists. Instead, many tout certification by the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, though the medical establishment does not recognize the group's bona fides.

The clinics offer personalized programs of "age management" to business executives, affluent retirees, and other patients of means, sometimes coupled with the amenities of a vacation resort. The operations insist there are few, if any, side effects from HGH. Mainstream medical authorities say otherwise.

A 2007 review of 31 medical studies showed swelling in half of HGH patients, with joint pain or diabetes in more than a fifth. A French study of about 7,000 people who took HGH as children found a 30 percent higher risk of death from causes like bone tumors and stroke, stirring a health advisory from U.S. authorities.

For proof that the drug works, marketers turn to images like the memorable one of pot-bellied septuagenarian Dr. Jeffry Life, supposedly transformed into a ripped hulk of himself by his own program available at the upscale Las Vegas-based Cenegenics Elite Health. (He declined to be interviewed.)

These promoters of HGH say there is a connection between the drop-off in growth hormone levels through adulthood and the physical decline that begins in late middle age. Replace the hormone, they say, and the aging process slows.

"It's an easy ruse. People equate hormones with youth," said Dr. Tom Perls, a leading industry critic who does aging research at Boston University. "It's a marketing dream come true."

Mexico empties prison of inmates after deadly riot

AFP - Officials have removed all of the prisoners -- about 500 inmates -- from a prison in northern Mexico, one day after the facility erupted in violence, leaving 15 inmates and nine guards dead.

The prison "has been totally emptied as a preventive measure," Durango public safety spokesman Fernando Rios told AFP, who said the inmates had been distributed to penal facilities throughout the region.

Security forces said Tuesday's uprising, which occurred at the prison in the city of Gomez Palacio, erupted when prison guards foiled an attempted jailbreak by inmates.

Mass jailbreaks have become a recurring problem in Mexico. In September, 131 inmates escaped through the front door of a prison in Piedras Negras, a city on the US border.

A jailbreak at a prison in the northern state of Nuevo Leon in February saw 44 prisoners killed during fighting between two warring drug cartels.

In the last two years, 521 inmates have run free in 14 prison escapes while 352 homicides have been committed inside penitentiaries, according to the National Human Rights Commission.

Why More Tattoo Artists Are Wisely Saving Some Coin by ...

Tattoo Artists

Tattoo supplies are certainly far from a dime a dozen, even if you think that is how they appear to be when you shop for them online. The reality is that all tattoo artists, particularly non-established artists who aspire for artistic greatness, are going to require tattoo supplies at some point. Either to replenish dwindling supplies, or to get all stocked up and ready to open up shop.

No matter the reason behind you seeking some tattoo supplies, one thing remains certain: you can save a lot of time, money, frustration and inconvenience by shopping for such supplies online, as opposed to dealing with the local store, the lines and the insane retail markup that can be as much as 500% off the cost. When you do the math, it?s a lot of time and money that you save, and you can generally get the same name brand supplies that you and your clientele swear by far easier online.

More Selection
Let?s face the facts: no warehouse can compete with a website. Nor any store for that matter. They simply do not have the space to do so. A website will always ? or at least a large one ? have more selection. That?s because online stores don?t have to pay a whopping amount of money in rent for each square foot of space they intend to store such items in. So this means more selection, and that?s everything in the tattooing world.

Easier to Order
Ask yourself this: is it easier to order from your home computer in your pajamas, or to run around town like a maniac trying to find tattoo supplies? Of course, the answer is from home. No store can make it more convenient than ordering from wherever and whenever you desire online.

Better Prices
Do you want to pay more or pay less for the name brand tattoo supplies that you require? Certainly, your answer is that you want to pay less for the same brands that you already are using on your loyal clients. Online stores simply have better prices because they have fewer overhead costs. This means you save a lot more money when shopping online.

Drop Shipping
Last and certainly not least, don?t discredit drop shipping. Your supplies will arrive in the shipping time you allotted, and at your front door. No need to go anywhere. Just remove them from the packaging and restock your inventory.

Bank robbers use homemade rope to escape jail

By NBCChicago.com

CHICAGO - A pair of convicted bank robbers escaped from a Chicago jail Tuesday by taking out the bars of a window and climbing down a rope made from scraps of cloth.

Central District Police Sgt. Michael Lazzaro said the men likely escaped the Metropolitan Correctional Center between 5 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The FBI identified the men as 37-year-old Jose Banks and 38-year-old Kenneth Conley, who were believed to be traveling togethe. They were reportedly last seen Tuesday morning in the Tinley Park area. Federal arrest warrants were issued Tuesday evening.

Police surrounded a home in Tinley Park just before noon looking for the men.

Banks -- known as the "Second Hand Bandit" -- was convicted last week of stealing more than $600,000 during armed robberies. His cellmate, Conley, was convicted of stealing $4,000 last year from a bank in Homewood, Ill.

Read more news from NBCChicago.com

Lazzaro said the men escaped out a window using what one officer described as a rope made out of fabric scraps.

The rope was seen still hanging down the side of the building Tuesday before being pulled up just before noon.

According to the complaint affidavit, Banks and Conley were cellmates and were present during a physical head count at 10 p.m. Monday.

Fake window bars
Following their escape, investigators said they found metal window bars tucked inside the inmates' mattresses, fake metal bars inside the cell and clothing in the shape of a body under the bed's blankets.

FBI officials said Banks and Conley should be considered armed and dangerous. Chicago police and U.S. Marshals searched several locations, including a Greyhound bus station, but came up empty.

Prisoner escapes, found in N.J. hospital vent less than an hour later

The Metropolitan Correctional Center, a federal detention center in Chicago's Loop operated by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, has been the site of escape attempts before.

The brother of "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan pleaded guilty in 2010 for trying to escape the jail using a rope made of bed sheets. Matthew Nolan planned to rappel down the side of the building using a 31-foot rope of bed sheets hidden in a mattress.

Fugitive who escaped from prison more than 31 years ago finally caught

In 1985, two men escaped by shimmying down a 75-foot extension cord they threw out the window.

Escape carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, authorities explained in a statement.?

Google Digitizes Ten Commandments, Book of Genesis

Googlers can now read the Ten Commandments in its original script, assuming you can understand ancient Hebrew.

In collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority, Google has launched the Leon Levy Dead Sea Scrolls Digital Library, an online collection of 5,000 images of scroll fragments, at what Google boasted is a "quality never seen before."

The texts include one of the earliest known copies of Deuteronomy, which contains the Ten Commandments, part of the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, and hundreds of more 2,000-year-old texts, "shedding light on the time when Jesus lived and preached, and on the history of Judaism," Google said.

"Millions of users and scholars can discover and decipher details invisible to the naked eye, at 1215 dpi resolution," Eyal Miller, principle of Google's new business development, and Yossi Matias, head of the Israel research and development center, wrote in a blog post. "The site displays infrared and color images that are equal in quality to the Scrolls themselves."

A database containing information for 900 manuscripts, as well as interactive content pages, are available now in the new digital library. The project is hosted on the Google Storage and App Engine, and utilizes Maps, YouTube, and Google image technology.

"This partnership with the Israel Antiquities Authority is part of our ongoing work to bring important cultural and historical materials online, to make them accessible and help preserve them for future generations," the Google team said.

Other similar projects include the Yad Vashem Holocaust photo collection, the Google Art Project, World Wonders, and the Google Cultural Institute.

Google published a set of Dead Sea Scrolls on the Web in Sept. 2011, offering searchable, high-resolution images of the Book of Isaiah, the Temple Scroll, and three others, accompanied by informative videos, background information, and historical data.

Overcoming Obesity Can be Filled With Fear and Anxiety | Fitness ...

For many who are overweight the decision to take control of your health is met with more challenges than simply starting a diet and exercise program. Making such a decision can also be linked to fear and anxiety, and often time these are the primary roadblocks to success.

Most of you, who have at some point in your lives found that your health has gotten away from you and your weight is leading the way, have made an attempt to lose weight before. You may have found that you did not have the patience or the will power to stick with the course of action you decided on, or maybe you felt as if you were not getting the support you needed to accomplish your goals.

For one reason or another whether caused by being overweight, or as a trigger that sent you down this path, a low self-esteem is often associated with obesity. Low self-esteem and previous failures can result in people not feeling comfortable with going to a gym, the fear of failing before you even start, and may even keep people from telling others that they want to make a change.

It is easy to give up before you start. You need more than a good diet and fitness program to succeed. You also need support and motivation. You need to set goals, both short-term and long-term, and you need to understand that slipping up once in a while is not a failure. You also need to accept that a commitment to health is a long-term prospect, and overnight success is nowhere in the playbook. Every single time you put one less spoonful of food on your plate, eat one less donut, or skip the super-size menu, you have made a successful step in the right direction.

When it comes to burning extra calories, toning muscle, or improving your cardiovascular system, think basics to get started. You do not need an expensive gym membership, nor do you need to buy a bunch of bulky and costly fitness equipment. Just get up and get moving. While you are watching your favorite television show, just stand up and lightly jog in place. Do some high stepping knee raises, throw some ?air? punches in different directions, twist your body a little and you are working legs, arms, abs and your heart.

Set a long-term goal to be healthy. Set a long-term target weight if you must, but for certain, set attainable short-term goals, and set up a reward structure. For example, ?I am going to exercise 20 minutes a day, three days this week, and if I accomplish this goal I will award myself with?.?

You can find free online support groups like the one I use, that offer message boards, chats, fitness tracking and much more. There is also a free online workout video available that you can use to get you started on your way to better health. All you need to get started is your decision, and a little time. Please, set the example and give yourself and America?s children a brighter and healthier future!

Treasure Map December 21 2012 the best places in the World for ...

Astrocartography is the map of the Sun moon planets and Nodes as they ascend and descend over the earth for any particular place and time. It is an astrology program that maps out ?the best and worst energies coalescing for an individual to live, work or to soak up those specific combinations of energies and powers. Jupiter is luck expansion, Neptune is spirituality and creativity. Venus is love, money and creativity.

December 21 2012 ?is nothing to be afraid of. IT IS ?NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!!!

My cousin Carol Karasik, a writer and tour guide of ?Mayan sites lives at Palenque where the Mayan calendar is and has studied with indigenous Mayans and Archeo-astronomers for over 30 years. She keeps humorously chastising me for writing about Dec 21 2012, it is all hype. The real Maya people ask ?what is all this we hear about the end of the world?? in bewilderment. There a lot of money making scammers out there, fear mongers and New Age delusional false guru?s of the ego.

I am on the side of positive intention, Mercury, Magic in the Tarot. I am not ?all in the Light New Age stuff at all, which my husband refers to as newage, like sewage. I am more inclined to ?Stuart Wilde, its all run by the Fat Controllers, NWO, secret war of the media, David Ike, Alex Jones and the like, Astrologer Eric Francis is doing a good sleuthing story on all this as well.

So if enough people believe in a positive New Feminine World being born ? then that is what they will create. They will have to do the work of embodying it too.

So check out the Dec 21 2012 Winter Solstice ingress which is important anyways, on the Map of the planets in the World,

Jihadis bankroll aid efforts in Syria to win followers

To keep his small charity afloat in Aleppo where the cost of supplies have doubled and tripled in recent months, Abu Ahmad must cobble together funding from a range of donors that includes everyone from wealthy Syrian expatriates to charities in Europe.

He was cautiously receptive when fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra approached him offering to help with his relief efforts. One of the many groups fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, Jabhat al-Nusra is a hardline Islamist organization that was officially classified as a terrorist organization by the US State Department on Wednesday and that is looked upon by many Syrians with trepidation.

?Before I met them, I thought they were tough and not easy to work with, but after working with them I found that the opposite of that is true,? Mr. Ahmad says, explaining that the group was better organized than some professional charities he?s worked with. ?I don?t believe Jabhat al-Nusra will be bad. I think both the domestic and international media has deformed their image.?

Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

Throughout Aleppo, rebel progress now has many residents no longer talking about if President Bashar al-Assad will fall but when. The confidence that a new future is within reach has many groups that will want a stake in post-Assad Syria vying for influence, and humanitarian aid has become one of their favored tools for reaching their soon-to-be constituents. Among those with money are jihadi groups like Jabhat al-Nursa, which the State Department says has ties to Al Qaeda in Iraq.

?Every organization that is providing Syrians with relief has its own agenda,? says Ayub Abu Kaleel, a teacher. ?There are conditions when you take aid. It?s like marketing for these organizations. The only honest aid comes from neighbors helping neighbors.?

Mr. Kaleel says Islamist groups have often tried to approach him with offers to help provide for students and his school in exchange for allowing the Islamist group to dictate his curriculum.

Syria?s conflict has claimed more than 40,000 lives and much of the violence has been indiscriminate, proving a serious deterrent for a number of international aid groups unwilling to incur the risk of working inside Syria at the present time.

Though many foreign organizations are offering assistance in some form, Syrians outside refugee camps along the border say the presence of international aid is virtually non-existent.

In this vacuum, a number of groups have risen to provide aid, inspired by interests more Machiavellian than charitable. Extremist groups from both sides of the political spectrum are now using aid to attract supporters, but a number of Syrians say that conservative Islamist groups have been among the most aggressive. Jabhat al-Nusra even includes informational brochures and CDs in some of their aid packages.

?Some people are on the fence politically, but when they get a lot of aid from an extremist group they?ll go with that group,? says Abu Ali, an activist involved in grass roots relief efforts. ?Those people with agendas are extremists. It doesn?t matter if they?re from the left or the right, they?re extremists, and when you feed a poor person you own him.?

Despite these concerns, a number of Syrians say that for the time being their differences are only ideological and not at risk of creating dangerous tensions yet. If Jabhat al-Nusra or any group oversteps the bounds in a Syria without the Assad government, locals say their 21-month uprising has left them equipped to deal with the problem.

?This is just a temporary situation. I believe that people who bring down Assad will be able to topple anyone who makes problems in the future,? says Abu Moaen, an attorney involved with grass roots relief efforts in his neighborhood.
